Two young men are arguing with a cynical old bachelor about the fidelity of women, maintaining that their girlfriends (two sisters) would never betray them, while the bachelor insists that all women are the same and that these two would be bound to be unfaithful eventually. They nearly come to blows, until the older man makes a bet with them that within 48 hours, if they do exactly what he tells them to, the young men will have certain proof that their girls have cheated on them…
The plan is that the men will be called away on military service (faked), and will then turn up in disguise and chat up the two women (who, remarkably, don’t see through the disguise!). The plot now becomes very complicated, but briefly, the old rake gets the sisters’ ‘daily help’ to assist him in his plot (which includes her pretending to be a doctor and a lawyer); each of the two guys chats up the other’s girlfriend – with varying success – and it all works out happily in the end. (And the music is, as you might expect, wonderful).
