Archives - The Importance of Being Earnest

by Oscar Wilde

Directed by Margaret Hakansson

Saturday 2nd – Saturday 9th May 1992 in the Auditorium

Described by Oscar Wilde as “A trivial comedy for serious people”, Importance has hardly been off a stage some time, somewhere since the first performance in 1895. Yet the wit is as crisp and sharp as when it delighted those first audiences.

Gwendoline refuses to marry Jack because his name is not Ernest. Her mother, Lady Bracknell, will not countenance him as a son-in-law because he was bred in a handbag (how should that line be said…?).

A favourite play which retains its freshness.
