Archives - Death and The Maiden

by Ariel Dorfman

Directed by Hugh Croydon

Friday 29th September – Saturday 7th October 1995 in the Auditorium

The play concerns Paulina who, fifteen years earlier, had been picked up by the police, blindfolded, tortured and raped. Her husband Geraldo is helped by a stranger when his car breaks down. Geraldo brings the stranger, a Dr Miranda, to his house, where Paulina becomes convinced that Dr Miranda is the one who tortured and raped her fifteen years ago. Husband and wife are caught in a gripping and passionate deadlock: one liberal and judicious, the other victimised and full of hatred.

This astonishing play had its world premiere at the Royal Court Theatre in 1991.
